Some may be staring in it non-stop if they are discussing something actively but that is not something they do 8 hours daily or something. People most usually leave IRC client minimised and peek in just sometimes few times during the day. I would simply recommend leaving your ChatZilla open and going to have dinner or something and then coming back, seeing what's new. If you could just try to join #firefox,#sumo,#chatzilla you would see a bot talking several times every 10 minutes (in #firefox) and generally #firefox is a largeer chanenl so talking to others would be easier. If there is only 3 people it could take weeks to see them do that they may be idling for a pretty long time. Yes, if the 2 others are chatting you would see them.
